Program: Evniromental Scanning
As part of effective HR Planning and Strategic Planning, HR professionals and corporate executives must analyze data from both inside the organization and outside its boundaries. The process of looking at what is happening outside the organization is known as Environmental Scanning.
In this interactive session, HR professional Ginny McMinn will provide guidelines on what to look for, where to look, and how to use the data gathered through environmental scanning. The program will also address the internal analysis necessary to complement the external data gathering.
Learning objectives:
Participants will learn the following:
- To ensure that relevant elements of the external environment are considered
- To identify relevant information sources and data
- To analyze impact(s) of the data gathered
- To couple outside data with what is known internally to assess trends and internal readiness
- To use the information and analysis for decision making relative to human resource plans and strategic planning
Training methods will include mini-lecture, group discussion, case study, active analysis techniques.

Virginia A. McMinn (Ginny) is a third generation entrepreneur with a passion for small business. She is founder and owner of McMinnHR™, which celebrates its 22nd in 2010. Ginny was awarded a Master of Science Degree in Industrial Relations (MSIR), from the Institute of Human Resources and Industrial Relations at Loyola University of Chicago. Previously, she attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana. She has also been honored by the Human Resource Certification Institute with Lifetime Accreditation as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), based on an examination, references and experience in the Human Resources field. She has also been awarded a Certificate in Employee Relations Law from the Institute of Applied Management and Law.
Ginny McMinn is a member of the Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA), and a former Board officer. She is also an active member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and its local chapter, Valley of the Sun Human Resources Association; and the AZSHRM Consultants Forum. Ginny has served as the statewide HRCI Certification Chair, Arizona SHRM State Council; since 2000, she has been an instructor training fellow HR professionals for accreditation.
